THINGS TO DO IN FEBRUARY
chit potatoes - early seed potatoes in trays out of frost for 4-6 weeks to encourage shoots - this can lead to earlier crops.
prepare runner bean trenches - dig a 45 cm deep trench and fill with well-rotted garden compost or manure ready for spring planting
cabbages - sow 2cm deep in modular trays in greenhouse - 'hispi' or 'elisa' are good cultivars to try
mulch your perennial veg - asparagus and globe artichokes
sow tomatoes late February in pots or seed trays - they need warmth to germinate
cover peach, apricot and nectarine trees from frost but remove during the day
PRUNE
prune autumn-fruiting raspberries - cut back old stems to the ground and apply a thick layer of mulch
prune vines, figs and blueberries
prune late-summer clematis - cut back old stems
trim winter jasmine immediately after blooming prune hedges - beech, hawthorn and hornbeam - and mulch
remove leaves from epimediums
take hardwood cuttings - weigela and deutzia
plant bare-rooted roses and apply thick layer of mulch
divide snow drops 'in the green' (after flowering before leaves die)
